My hair looks frizzy, could it be curly?

The curl revolution is taking over everywhere and now we see many more curly haired men and women in every direction. What could be the reason? For starters I think more acceptability that comes with more knowledge about textured hair and how to take care of it.

When I was growing up, my mom would try to wash my hair with shikakai (which would take days to leave my hair) and then dry it with a towel and then comb it, imagine the amount of frizz that would be my mass of hair. And the tangling. I would sit and she would comb my hair for at least one hour. Part it into sections, start from the tips and go to the roots and then put it into two plaits and keep them untangled for the day.

And what if I had to go out say for a wedding, then I would leave my hair open and would look exactly like this:
